Premiers pay tribute to 'greatest civil servant' Jeremy Heywood

Theresa May and predecessors David Cameron, Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and John Major remembered and gave eulogies to former Cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood, who died last year at 56.

His position as the UK’s most senior civil servant led him to be likened to Sir Humphrey Appleby, the know-it-all mandarin from Yes Minister.

In a testimony delivered without notes, Mrs May hailed Sir Jeremy as “not just an extraordinary adviser but an extraordinary doer”.

She said: “Nothing stopped him until he found a solution. Whatever the issue was, Jeremy always sorted it.
