The Act, which is streaming in the UK now on StarzPlay on Amazon Prime, shows us the events that led to the imprisonment of Gypsy Rose Blanchard (played by Joey King) for the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard (Patricia Arquette). What happened to Gypsy Rose Blanchard?

In July 2015, Gypsy Rose Blanchard accepted a plea bargain to serve 10 years for the second degree murder of her mother Dee Dee.

Metro reports Gypsy had previously met Nick Godejohn on a dating website, where the two formed a romantic relationship before plotting to kill Gypsy’s mother.

Prior to this, Gypsy had a difficult upbringing from her mother, who it has been suggested suffered from Munchhausen syndrome by proxy, a condition that led her to fabricate a series of illnesses in her daughter including asthma, brain damage, muscular dystrophy and leukaemia.

As part of this, Gypsy was forced to use a wheelchair despite having no mobility problems.

After numerous escape attempts were foiled by Dee Dee, Gypsy began to plan her mum’s murder, with Nick killing Dee Dee by stabbing her in the back while Gypsy hid in the bathroom.
