Speaking about Brexit to Express.co.uk he said: “It is absolutely existentially vital for the Conservative Party that it does happen.

“It’s much more questionable for the Labour Party.”

In his book Mr Goodhart argues one of the key contemporary political divides is between the ‘somewheres’, who feel a strong sense of national identity, and the more cosmopolitan ‘anywheres’.

He argues the latter group have had political power disproportionate to their numbers, and that the populist surge across Europe and the United States is a response to this.
