Taxpayers were billed £2,189 for 11 members of HS2's "executive team" to enjoy a "classic 24-hour package", documents show. The deal, for business delegates, includes meeting room hire, pastries, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and use of the hotel's health club. An invoice obtained by the Sunday Express shows that a second classic 24-hour package for the group, who were there for a "strategic leadership and management planning session", cost a further £1,969.

According to the documents, "the meeting was held over three days".

A response to a Freedom of Information request reveals no minutes were taken.

John O'Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, has slammed the spending.
