Diana caused considerable controversy (Image: GETTY)
One of the first major controversies was when Diana chose her own engagement ring, going so far as to select the stunning sapphire and diamond ring from a catalogue by Garrard jewellers. It was considered very un-royal to choose a ring that commoners had access to via a catalogue. The Princess of Wales spoke about her jewellery before she passed away.
She wrote in a special letter: ”I would like you to allocate all my jewellery to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it.
“I leave the exact division of the jewellery to your discretion."
And so, William and Harry did just that.
Prince William gave the engagement ring to Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

William said in the same interview: “I’d been carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go.
