France is set to see temperatures rocket to 40C this week as authorities raise the weather alert to orange. Orange is the second highest alert there is, with the caution issued by French authorities: “Be very vigilant.” Health warnings have been issued for older people and young children. The heat is expected to hit record-breaking temperatures for June.

Meteorologist Guillaume Séchet told French publication Le Parisien: "The mercury will already reach incredible temperatures but with the humidity level in the air, the feeling will be terrible.

"While we will have almost 40C in Paris, the atmosphere will be so heavy that we will feel the heat as if it were 47C."

Guidelines for how to survive the blistering heat have been issued by officials across Europe.

Hospitals are also on high-alert for an increase to admissions relating to heat-stroke, dehydration and other heat-related conditions.

The NHS details hot weather advice online. Pointers include: “Drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol – water, lower-fat milks and tea and coffee are good options. You can also drink fruit juice, smoothies and soft drinks, but they can be high in sugar.”
