The BBC Radio 5 Live challenged the Tory MP after he defended Boris Johnson's plans to revert to World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules in the event of a no deal Brexit. Mr Johnson suggested Britain could get a "10-year standstill" on current trade arrangements with the European Union while a new deal is being thrashed out thanks to Article 24 of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Mr Kawczynski insisted the proposal is "not wrong" despite several experts – including the Brexiteer International Trade Secretary, Liam Fox – rebuking Mr Johnson's claim, prompting Ms Barnett to ask: "It’s a total misunderstanding of how we can leave on no deal.
"You are supporting a man who has been factually inaccurate already about the terms of a no deal."
The Shrewsbury and Atcham MP hit back saying the Brexit policy Mr Johnson has proposed will be "scrutinised" during the remainder of the Tory leadership contest as he said "I don't believe he is incorrect."
Ms Barnett however did not accept his response: "Because you don’t believe facts?
"I’m not debating whether it’s no deal or not. I’m debating that the key detail Boris Johnson gave about the GATT 24 rule is wrong.
