Russian media has been very critical of Chernobyl on HBO and Sky, with state outlets calling the series out for being unrealistic and for being pro-American propaganda. Chernobyl, however, has been met with praise from the actual people of Russia according to a recent tweet thread from a think tank. The Sky and HBO show may be getting a Russian remake, however, as the country feels the need to tell its own story, according to one newspaper.

What does Russia really think about Chernobyl?

If the Russian newspapers are anything to go by, then there is a lot of negative sentiment against Chernobyl.

However, the Russian wing of the Carnegie Endowment global think tank questions how accurate these opinions actually are.

The Moscow Times reports that Russian newspaper Argumenty i Fakty called the series: “A caricature and not the truth.”

Furthermore, per The Moscow Times: “Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP), Russia’s most popular newspaper, raised suspicions that competitors of state-atomic center Rosatom were using the series to tarnish this country’s image as a nuclear power.”

However, the Carnegie Moscow Center digital director Gosha Birge questioned this in the following thread: “You might have heard that Russians loved #ChernobylHBO. Or you might have heard that Russians hated #ChernobylHBO. You are probably confused, and you should be. 2/

“The truth is that most Russian viewers praised the show, its accuracy, the way it honours the liquidators working at the site, and how well it captures nuanced details about the late Soviet period. 3/

“But Russian state media are saying the show is a lie, that it is Western propaganda and a sign of 'Russophobia.'
