Temperatures are expected to plummet amid the 50mph winds as the mercury struggles to reach the 20s. Delays are expected to impact road, rail, air and ferry transport according to the Met Office while journey times may also take longer. Blue skies and sunshine will pour through the blanket of clouds this morning.

Met Office meteorologist Sophie Yeomans said: “It's another grey and murky start out there for some of us.

“The good news is the cloud will break up leaving us with hot and sunny conditions as we head into the afternoon so we can already see some sunshine across the northern half of the UK.

“Scotland and Northern Ireland starting with bright blue skies it's into England and Wales where we'll see the grey start.”

The southwest can expect strong winds throughout Thursday and Friday ahead of the heat blast this weekend.
