The Central Park Five saw the harrowing true story of their wrongful convictions brought to life on Netflix series When They See Us. Directed by Ava DuVernay, When They See Us tells the stories of Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Kevin Richardson after all five were arrested and convicted for a crime they never committed. When They See Us dropped on Netflix on Friday, May 30 with all four episodes available to stream at once.

Netflix tends not to release ratings and viewing figures for its original content.

However, When They See Us director and writer Ava DuVernay revealed the staggering number in a heartfelt tweet.

DuVernay told her Twitter followers: “Imagine believing the world doesn’t care about real stories of black people.

“It always made me sad. So when Netflix just shared with me that 23 million plus accounts worldwide have watched #WhenTheySeeUs, I cried.

“Our stories matter and can move across the globe. A new truth for a new day.”

The impressive ratings shouldn’t come as a surprise to When They See Us viewers following the acclaim the series has received since its release.

Popular TV and movie ratings site Rotten Tomatoes gives When They See Us a 95 percent rating.

When They See Us is also marked as 9.1 out of 10 on IMDb, making it number 27
