This has been done without the need for flamboyant public interventions but through a diligence in her role and a strong sense of duty. So when the Queen makes one of her rare public interventions we should all listen, because it comes after much consideration. Speaking in the Scottish Parliament to mark its 20th anniversary, she reminded the elected members there that parliament is not just about talking, it’s about listening and honouring each other’s views. More than that, it is about putting talk into action.

While the Scottish Parliament has earned an unfortunate reputation as a talking shop, we cannot help but agree that the Queen had a wider audience in mind and was addressing MPs in Westminster too.

She did not use the B-word – she did not need to – but her words can quite easily be interpreted as the message the whole country wants to give Parliament on Brexit: “Stop arguing and just get on with it!”
