Mr Ellwood said the Conservatives would have to persuade the European Research Group (ERG) to support the deal Mr Johnson brings back to Parliament or by law, he will have to request a three-month extension from the EU. The Remain MP believes a deal is in sight so long as discussions between the UK and EU continue. He added a deal is likely to pass through Parliament despite the huge amount of Remain MP hoping to block it because of Labour MPs from Brexit-facing seats as well as the DUP looking for alternative arrangements to resolve the Brexit impasse.

Speaking to Channel 4 news, Mr Ellwood said: “It’s your position that’s actually defining who you are. Once we actually resolve Brexit and get past that line, I hope we will return to a more traditional politics as we see in this country.”

He was then asked on how he will get the ERG to support a deal as they have been campaigning for a no deal.

Mr Ellwood added: “We need to and it’s important that they recognise that the same punishment was inflicted on the same 21 who voted against the government last will also be impacted on them too.

“I want to see a deal put back on the table.
