Diana became known as the People’s Princess due to her empathetic nature and magnetic personality. She was a humanitarian and was considered a global fashion icon. However, she was also known for her highly publicised marriage and subsequent divorce to the heir presumptive – Charles. The couple originally met when Charles was dating her sister Lady Sarah and Diana was only 16.
They later had a whirlwind relationship, but the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were happy with the match and Charles proposed when Diana was only 19.
She was thrust into the limelight immediately, as many thought she was the future Queen consort, but it soon became apparent that their relationship was not as idyllic as it had initially seemed.
In the 2017 BBC 5 Live podcast series, ‘Images of Diana’, journalist Natasha Kaplinsky recounted how Diana had confessed she had an incredibly upsetting belief about her own life and failed marriage.

Rosa Monckton, in a 2012 BBC interview, said Diana told her: “My problem is when people get to know me, they don’t love me anymore.
“‘First of all’, she said, ‘my mother left me, then my father left me essentially when he married again and then my husband left me.
“‘And then I go out onto the streets and people I’ve never met say that they love me.’”
Her friend commented: “That was a very difficult way for her to live her life.”
