In a tragic plot hoping to highlight the growing issue of loneliness and elderly people, fans will watch as Rita falls victim to the ongoing problem.

Rita will be left for dead as the tear-jerking storyline sees her fall when trying to decorate her Christmas tree with fairy lights.

The tree will fall on top of her, trapping her for several days.

But as poor Rita told neighbours she was leaving the cobbles for Christmas, nobody bats an eyelid when they see her house in darkness.

But in a Christmas miracle, her certain peril disappears as she is found by a neighbour.

In a later heart-wrenching scene, she tells her Weatherfield pals she had “thought she was a goner” after the freak accident left her unable to reach help.
