Tonight’s first episode of His Dark Materials sees Mrs Coulter (played by Ruth Wilson) visit Jordan College with a proposition. Fans of the Philip Pullman books the BBC series is based on will know she is involved in the disappearance of children and has plenty of secrets.

Speaking at a recent screening for His Dark Materials, actress Ruth revealed to press including, they took extra care to make sure Mrs Coulter could convince children to trust her.

To do so, extra attention was paid to Mrs Coulter’s outfits.

Ruth said Hedy Lamarr “featured in my head white a lot” when looking for inspiration for Mrs Coulter.

“I think when I was talking to Caroline, who designed all her amazing costumes, we were discussing it’s not our world but it’s not period but it’s not our world, so it’s somewhere in between and so we came up with this idea of 30s, 40s style,” Ruth explained.

“I feel like Mrs Coulter is a bit of a control freak.

“She needs to be in control and that’s as much in her look as everything else.

“So I felt the symmetry of the centre parting and hair parted and I wanted to be soft.”

Ruth went on to add: “I wanted her to still be approachable to children, I mean, she’s got to attract kids.
