Prince Andrew was photographed with a then 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre nee Roberts despite saying he “doesn’t remember” ever meeting her. Palace sources have said the infamous photo is fake but Mrs Giuffre insisted it was genuine while the Duke of York said it can’t be proved. He told BBC Newsnight: “You can’t prove whether or not that photograph is faked because it’s a photograph of a photograph of a photograph.”

“It’s very difficult to be able to prove it but I don’t remember that photograph being taken. That’s me but whether that’s my hand, I have simply no recollection of the photograph ever being taken.”

Prince Andrew added the photo appeared to be taken upstairs in his friend Ghislaine Maxwell’s house where he has never been.

But Mrs Giuffre said it is real and she gave the original to the FBI in 2011.

She told Panorama: “I think the world is getting sick of these ridiculous excuses. It’s a real photo. I’ve given it to the FBI for their investigation and it’s an authentic photo. There's a date on the back of it from when it was printed.”

BBC Panorama found an affidavit from a man Virginia Giuffre was dating in 2001 that supports her story about the photo.

Tony Figueroa says in his statement that he saw the picture of the prince and the teenager back then and that Virginia Giuffre had told him she had been forced to have sex with the prince.

The programme has also spoken to the freelance photographer who first copied the picture in 2011.

Michael Thomas is convinced the picture is genuine because he found it in the middle of a bundle of photos that Virginia Giuffre handed him from her travels with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
