The Brexit Party leader withdrew 317 candidates out of fears of a Remain alliance taking power by the end of the year. But Alexandra Phillips MEP has explained the pressurising moment which put the need to stand down into perspective. Ms Barnet asked: “You’re not hoping to be in the next election because you hope Brexit has happened and you hope you’ve served your purpose. Your party leader bottled it and in the process disenfranchised you.”
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live, Ms Phillips said: “I think at the end of the day, the amount of pressure coming on our party.”
Ms Barnett interjected: “What, from the Daily Mail? Couldn’t you have handled it.”
Ms Phillips continued: “No because what you had were private email addresses of candidates being published the general public being asked to essentially harass them to stop them from standing which i think it actually quite frightening.”
The BBC host continued: “I think that would be horrifying but Nigel Farage knows how to take flack.
