Loose Women star Denise Welch, 61, has opened up about her issues with her weight and admitted it can be “soul destroying”. The ITV favourite said that despite giving up alcohol and smoking, she soon realised she had replaced her old addictions with food.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Denise spoke about her decision to team up with Lighter Life - which assisted in helping the ITV star lose weight.
She divulged: "[The weight loss programme] changed my life. I gave up alcohol eight years ago.
“Everyone seems to have this thing that if they give up alcohol they’ll lose weight. Actually, it’s the other way around. You replace it with something else. I gave up alcohol and immediately replaced it with food.”
The Loose Women panellist admitted she fed her cravings by comfort eating and admitted it was “destructive” to her overall health.

“I didn’t struggle with weight until I gave up drinking,” Denise explained.
The presenter has previously spoken about her battle with depression and revealed she used alcohol to “self-medicate”, which in turn kept her slim.
Denise said: “I was self-medicating depression with alcohol and it was making me more depressed. I was slim, if someone said to me, ‘God you look amazing. You’re so skinny,’ I couldn’t take the compliment. It was all the destructive things in my life.”
But the Loose Women star took the decision to give up alcohol and smoking eight years ago but began to eat a lot more food.
