Outlander follows time traveller Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe), who was catapulted back to 18th Century Scotland when she touched the stones at Craigh Na Dun. Unsure of how to get back to her own time to reunite with husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), she ended up falling for highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). The pair’s love story has spanned over three decades and despite a 20-year separation, they are happily settled on Fraser’s Ridge in North Carolina.
Fans are incredibly supportive of actors Caitriona and Sam who play Claire and Jamie throughout their journey on the show.
However, it seems Caitriona almost didn’t play Claire as bosses decided to offer her the role at the last minute.
Showrunner Ronald D Moore, explained they felt Claire would be the “easiest” to cast.
However, they began to grow concerned when they struggled to find the right person to play opposite Sam.
