Showtime series Dexter aired between 2006 and 2013 and turned its lead Michael C. Hall into a huge star as the titular blood spatter analyst by day and ethical serial killer by night. The show won many awards during its run including several for Hall. Despite being a huge success with critics and fans alike, its popularity dwindled, and the show was wrapped up on an ambivalent and highly controversial note.

Season eight finished with Dexter Morgan going into hiding and becoming a lumberjack in the remote wilds of Oregon.
Dexter had been planning to flee America with his love interest Hannah McKay (played by Yvonne Strahovski) and his son Harrison (Jadon Wells), but this was all scuppered by an attack on his sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter).
The former member of the Miami Police Department fled after facing tragedy when his sister Debra was left braindead following an attack by serial killer Oliver Saxon (Darri Ingólfsson).
She suffered a stroke which left her in a vegetative state, leading Dexter to murder Saxon in revenge for his sister.

Dexter was caught killing Saxon on CCTV but somehow managed to persuade the authorities it was an act of self-defence rather than retribution for this sister.
