While there is no official timeline for humanity's seemingly inevitable arrival for Mars, the process will begin when NASA arrives back at the Moon in 2024. NASA is set to build a lunar base which will partly act as a jumping-off point on the journey to Mars.

SpaceX is gearing up for the arrival of humans to Mars by promising to deliver internet to the Red Planet.

According to SpaceX's President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell, the process will see SpaceX establishing a Starlink satellite system to orbit Mars, much like the company is doing on Earth.

Ms Shotwell told Time: "Once we take people to Mars, they’re going to need a capability to communicate.

"In fact, I think it will be even more critical to have a constellation like Starlink around Mars.

"And then, of course, you need to connect the two planets as well, so we make sure we have robust telecom between Mars and back on Earth."

Ms Shotwell was also keen to stress that, while SpaceX has set its sights on getting people to Mars, it has not given up on Earth.
