Roger played a key role in helping to launch Sir Cliff’s career as he bought his son his first guitar and as his music increased in popularity, he became part of his management team. However, the happiness didn’t last as he died of lung disease when Sir Cliff was only 20-years-old. Speaking to Piers Morgan on Life Stories, Sir Cliff said he is devastated his father never got to see him receive his knighthood from the Queen.
Sir Cliff said of his father’s illness: “It wasn’t easy for any of us, he was a naughty person, he did smoke a lot.”
He went on to recall Roger trying to light a cigarette while in hospital, remarking: “He was very single-minded.”
When asked if he knew his father was dying, Sir Cliff teared up as he explained: “Not until the doctors put him onto oxygen.
