Turkey’s minister of foreign affairs, Melvut Cavusoglu, urged the bloc to take a more positive approach and said the EU has “excessively politicised” the negotiations between Ankara and Brussels.
Mr Cavusoglu reiterated Turkey’s desire to join the EU ahead of a meeting with his Spanish counterpart Arancha Gonzalz Laya yesterday.
However, MEPs have lashed out at the idea of Turkey joining the EU.

Helene Laporte, MEP for France, simply tweeted: “No.”
This comes after Mr Cavusoglu said EU membership remains a “strategic priority” for Turkey.
