The survey by Harris Interactive comes as a devastating blow to Mr Macron ahead of next year's vote. The French president would receive 52 percent compared to Ms Le Pen's 48 percent in the second round of voting in the election, according to Le Parisien.

National Rally leader Ms Le Pen lost to centrist Mr Macron in the 2017 election.

The first round of the presidential election is due to take place in April 2022.

The second round is held two weeks later between the two candidates who receive the most votes.

Ms Le Pen, who came third to François Hollande in 2012, has announced she will stand next year.

Pro-European Mr Macron has not yet confirmed whether he will be running again.

The first round of the poll, commissioned by CommStrat and L'Opinion, put Ms Le Pen on 26 to 27 percent, while Mr Macron was on 23 to 24 percent.

The results suggest the pair are on course to battle it out in the second round once again.

The poll of 1,403 people was conducted on January 19-20.
