Surge testing is taking place in areas of East London following the detection of the South African variant in the area. It comes after two new cases of the South African variant were discovered in Redbridge yesterday, as well as cases of the South African and Brazilian variants confirmed in Tower Hamlets today (Saturday, May 1).
So far, variants of concern have been identified in Tower Hamlets in 10 sub-districts in the postcodes E1, E2, E3 and E14.
Neither Tower Hamlets Council nor NHS Test and Trace, has provided details of how many cases have been identified in these areas.
Testing has also begun across the IG1 and IG6 postcodes, and will take place in small areas of the IG5 and IG7 postcodes.
