Mr Gates and his wife Melinda have announced they are getting divorced after 27 years of marriage. The two first met in the Eighties when Melinda joined Bill’s Microsoft firm and they have three children together. They started the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and have spent billions fighting causes, in particular those related to infectious diseases and vaccination programmes.
Along with investor Warren Buffett, the Gates’ are behind the Giving Pledge, which called on billionaires to commit to giving away the majority of their wealth to good causes.
They said in a statement that they “no longer believe we can grow together as a couple”.
The pair tweeted: “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage.”
