Government departments blocked 986 documents from being released to the public under 'the 30-year rule’, the Times reports.

It is staggering increase from 460 in 2013.

The documents concern the years 1986 and 1987, when Margaret Thatcher was the Prime Minister and include official papers about arms sales to India and Saudi Arabia, as well as a visit to the Middle East by Prince Charles and Princess of Wales Diana.

The Advisory Council on National Records and Archives, which reviews application, has expressed concern over the amount of information being withheld by the civl service.

The independent body also found that a significant number of the refusals were invalid when challenged.

And it has requested a meeting with Whitehall
