After a difficult set of talks for both sides of the debate, German media has led the way in attacking Mrs May and some of the key figures in Britain’s EU exit.

The Suddeutsche Zeitung, Germany’s largest subscription daily newspaper, has been particularly scathing - titling their account of yesterday’s talks ‘May and her ministers are stumbling cluelessly into Brexit’.

While Bild headline an article ‘Dawdling Brits block Brexit talks’.

In the Zeitung article the PM is branded “the worst election campaigner the island has ever witnessed” who is “clinging to power” in an brutal attack on the Conservative leader.

The article reads: “No matter what you may think about the Britons' decision for Brexit, they are not to be envied for the staff meant to manage the country. 

“During the summer, she [Theresa May] had invited several deputies to her country estate Chequers for Prosecco and canapes. 

“Well-meaning people said it had been a wise manoeuvre to build a network within the party.
