Admiral Sir Philip Jones, the First Sea Lord, said a new generation of frigates will be fitted with voice control as the Royal Navy sails towards a “new era of maritime power”.

The Type 31e vessels, which are due to come into service within six years even though a design has yet to be chosen, will feature a wide rage of app-based technology. 

Sir Philip told delegates of the Defence Security Event (DSE) trade fair in London: “What this means in practice is that the Type 31e will feature different app-based tools which can access the ship’s data.
