Diageo marks Monday two centuries of Guinness beer sales in America, with the company having its North American headquarters in Norwalk and readying to open a new tourist brewery next year in Maryland.
Diageo traces the first Guinness sale to Oct. 16, 1817, citing a brewer’s log notation from that date of eight barrels of Guinness porter arriving in South Carolina.
Guinness is releasing a “200th Anniversary Export Stout” in commemoration of the milestone with a “throwback” recipe inspired by Benjamin Guinness, son of Arthur Guinness who created the brewery in 1759 in Dublin, Ireland. Diageo is also releasing this month Guinness Draught cans featuring artwork from ads featuring zoo animals that ran between the 1930s and the 1950s.
