In a book, written by biographer Andrew Morton, he pens: “Meghan and her friends watched the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, in early September 1997, tears coursing down their cheeks at the poignant moment when the cameras zoomed in on the royal coffin."
Mr Morton said that after the tragedy, Ms Markle and her friend Suzy Ardakani watched videos of Charles and Diana’s 1981 wedding.
Mr Morton went on to write: “According to family friends, she was intrigued by Diana, not just for her style, but for her independent humanitarian mission, seeing her as a role model.”
Ms Markle and Suzy collected clothes and toys for less privileged children.
Mr Morton penned: “Such was her interest that Suzy’s mother Sonia even gave her a copy of my biography, Diana: Her True Story, which remained on her bookshelves for the next few years.Related articles
“As friend Ninaki Priddy observed: ‘She was always fascinated by the Royal Family. She wants to be Princess Diana 2.0’.”
Andrew Morton’s latest book follows on from claims that Ms Markle “could be more popular than Diana” according to Erin Specht, who dated Meghan’s brother Tom Markle Jr for about 16 years.
Princess Diana was dubbed the “People’s Princess” as she was frequently seen chatting with people in homeless shelters, hugging children with AIDS and helping countless charities before she was killed in a car crash in 1997.
