A heart attack is a medical emergency, and requires immediate treatment, according to the NHS.
The condition, which is also known as myocardial infarction, is caused by a sudden blockage in the supply of blood to the heart.
The blockage may be caused by deposits of cholesterol in major blood vessels - a condition known as coronary heart disease.
