Dawid Malan fears his England career is over and is now planning for his post-playing future by helping to coach at Yorkshire.

The 36-year-old was England’s top run scorer in their disastrous 50-over World Cup campaign in India last autumn.

But Malan was then dropped for the subsequent ODI and T20 tours of the Caribbean despite being given a new one-year ECB contract.

The Yorkshire batsman has not spoken to any of the England management since then – and now holds little hope of being selected for their T20 World Cup defence in June.

‘I have no idea what they are thinking at the moment,’ admitted Malan. ‘I had a chat the day after the World Cup and that’s been it pretty much. We have got appraisals in 12 days, so I’ll probably find out a bit more then.

‘Obviously I know they might want to go in a different direction and that’s absolutely fine. They’re entitled to do whatever they need to do to move English cricket on in the right direction.

‘I am not looking too far ahead or wanting something that might not be there. I have made peace with that.

‘I have a different path that I am looking at in terms of the last two or three years in my career.’

Malan is England’s fourth highest T20 run scorer of all time – behind only Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales – and was ranked the world’s best batsman in the format as recently as 2021.
