Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton will not face any substantial barriers to competing in next year’s Ryder Cup after the DP World Tour moved to clear up confusion around their eligibility in the wake of joining the LIV series.

Rory McIlroy was among the players who called for a rewrite of the rules following Rahm’s £400million defection, with the world No 2 fearing the Spaniard would be unable to satisfy the European team’s selection criteria because of suspensions and fines accumulated each time he plays a LIV event.

It was the widely-held belief within the professional game that those suspensions only come into effect at the conclusion of the 14-tournament LIV season, effectively meaning a 14-week ban and therefore no realistic chance of playing the four DP World Tour tournaments needed to retain eligibility for Donald’s side in New York in 2025.

However, new DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings clarified that is not the case as suspensions can be served during the LIV season. In what might therefore be construed as a meaningless sanction, it transpires the rebels will be serving suspensions from tournaments that they would have had no intention of contesting anyway, such as this week’s Korea Championship, which runs on the same week as the LIV event in Adelaide.
