Tom Hardy admits he was a 'bog-standard alcoholic' his whole life

Tom Hardy has revealed he's been a 'bog-standard alcoholic' his whole life.

The Revenant star, who has been proudly sober now for over a decade, was addicted to booze and crack cocaine until his mid-20s and went to rehab in 2003.

The father-of-two, 41, has now admitted his past struggles helped him tap into the troubled psyche of his character in the new horror film Venom, in which he plays an investigative journalist whose body is invaded by an alien.

'I was a bog standard alcoholic my whole life,' he told Good Morning Britain's Richard Dawkins on Wednesday.

Tom's Jekyll and Hyde character, Eddie Brock, has violent instincts and feeds on a diet of human flesh after being taken over by the alien - but also desperately tries to restrain his gruesome desires.

And Hardy admitted that he can relate to the feeling of trying to keep yourself in check, saying: 'There were elements of that, like my inside voice.

'I can see the symbolism there, but I know that as a grown up and as a man I can't go out there and bite people's heads off.'

His reaction, he says now, was to think: 'Bang - I know where to find that now!' By the age of 13, he was on hallucinogens.

A couple of years later, he was expelled from his boarding school, Reed's, in Surrey, for stealing. By age 16, he was a mess of alcohol and crack cocaine, continually in trouble with the law, including being arrested for joyriding.

So badly affected was he that he once reportedly said: 'I would have sold my mother for a rock of crack.'

His drug and alcohol demons continued to plague him, until he collapsed after a crack cocaine binge in London in 2003 and was found lying in a pool of blood and vomit in Soho.

'That was a lesson to me,' he said later. 'In death, I was reborn.' He went to rehab and is proud to have been sober for over a decade.

He has since focused his restless energy on physical fitness - training with the Royal Marines as well as boxing and doing martial arts.

He admitted the addiction is never far away, telling the Daily Mirror: 'If I had four pints of lager and half a bottle of vodka I could turn this room into an absolute
