But Ruth Wilson opted for a more ethereal look as she attended The 2019 Met Gala Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion at Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday evening.

The screen star, 37, was the belle of the ball as she graced the prestigious fashion event in an elegant off-shoulder tulle dress, embellished with an elaborate ruffled train.

Highlighting her slender physique, the Jane Eyre actress' striking number was complemented with a thick black belt, which nailed the trendy monochrome look.

The Surrey native upped the style ante with her choice of footwear as she boosted her height in a pair of pointed black heels with a diamond encrusted buckle.

Accentuating her out-of-this-world beauty, the Lone Ranger star styled her tresses into volumised curls to maintain it over-the-top appearance, and wore heavy strokes of neutral-toned make-up.

Ruth injected even more pazzazz with her choice of accessories as she dazzled in sparkling door-knocker earrings, and toted a feathered chain-strap bag.

The Met Gala is the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and is the most glittery and exclusive event on the New York fashion calendar.

It is famous for attracting luminaries of Hollywood, of fashion, music, sports, TV and the stage for an evening of fashion and charity to mark the museum's spring exhibit.

This year, the exhibit and gala are dedicated to the idea of 'camp,' as defined by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay Notes on 'Camp.' 

The Met Gala, formally known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is always chaired by a team of high-wattage celebrities, and this year is no exception.

So what exactly is 'camp'?

The museum's exhibition is based on 'Notes on Camp,' an essay written in 1964 by American author Susan Sontag.

'Camp is by nature subversive (...) confronting and challenging the status quo,' the Costume Institute's head curator Andrew Bolton
