She gained worldwide fame for playing female action hero Xena the Warrior Princess over two decades ago. 

But Lucy Lawless has now revealed that she nearly missed out on landing the iconic role in a new interview with Stellar magazine. 

The New Zealand native, 51, explained that the TV series was originally meant to be a three-episode long spin-off and actress Vanessa Angel was initially cast as Xena.

Xena the Warrior Princess was supposed to follow on from Hercules: The Legendary Journey, but became a series within its own right. 

Lucy eventually landed the lead role as Xena and admitted she is surprised that fans from all over the world still remember her as the character. 

'I am still staggered that people remember [Xena] and me all these years later,' she said.
