Former TV host James Mathison made headlines over the weekend, years after he ditched fame in favour of a quiet life away from the spotlight.

The married father-of-two, 43, was pictured working at an Amazon warehouse on Sydney's Northern Beaches - a stark difference to life in the early 2000s, where he co-hosted Australian Idol for six years alongside Osher Günsberg.

After the news of his drastic career change came to light, fans flocked to social media to praise the TV personality for making an 'honest living' to support his family.

'He is doing what makes him happy and enjoying life regardless of the money, fame and all the perks. Good on him I say,' one fan wrote.

'Nothing wrong with that! He is making an honest living,' a second added, while a third chimed in: 'There is nothing wrong of living a normal life with an ordinary job. Enjoy what you have and what you are doing to lead a healthy and better life.'

'Any man willing to work and provide for his family gets my respect,' another wrote.

'He should be proud of himself, not everyone wants to be in love with the mirror!' another quipped, while one fan said: 'Good on him. Just goes to show that some people don't thrive on money and fame.'

Mathison was pictured working at one of the retail giant's distribution centres on Wednesday morning, alongside other casual employees.

Dressed in a hi-vis vest, hoodie, trackpants and baseball cap, Mathison pushed a trolley stacked with packages around the warehouse complex.

At one stage, he stopped so another worker could load several parcels onto the trolley before continuing with his duties.

Amazon warehouse staff typically arrive on site about 4am to begin sorting through thousands of packages before they're shipped out to customers.

Mathison rarely discusses his personal life on social media and has not disclosed his employment at Amazon, which opened its first Australian 'fulfilment centre' in Melbourne in December 2017.

He instead uses Twitter to share his political opinions, including advocating for action on climate change and the legalisation of psychedelics.
