Who is Chris Moyles? Radio DJ and I'm A Celebrity star's controversies trends now

Chris Moyles has come under fire this week after Charlotte Church recalled the time he offered to sleep with her after she turned 16 while live on his BBC Radio One show.

The DJ, 49, has faced his fair share of controversies over the years - from tax avoidance to warnings from Ofcom

Moyles joined Radio 1 back in July 1997, and began presenting the breakfast show in 2004, gaining an extra 1,000,000 listeners in his first quarter.

In 2009, he became the longest serving breakfast presenter on Radio 1, breaking the record previously set by Tony Blackburn, raised £2.4million for Comic Relief in 2011 with a 52 hour broadcast and went on to star in last year's I'm A Celebrity.

But as Charlotte, now 37, speaks out about Chris's 'dark' preposition when she was just a teenager, we take a look at the other times he has sparked outrage...

Charlotte Church has recalled the time Chris Moyles offered to sleep with her after she turned 16 while live on his BBC Radio One show.

Chris made the remark after a countdown to Charlotte losing her virginity was launched when she was aged 15 and Chris was a 28-year-old. He continues to  have his own show on Radio X.

Charlotte famously got a record deal as an opera singer aged 12 and she released her debut album Voice Of An Angel that year.

And talking to Kathy Burke on her latest documentary about the youth of today, Charlotte, now 37, said: 'There was this shift where I became fair game.

Charlotte continued: 'Of course, it wasn’t good. At least it was out in the open. That lads lads lads culture was prominent, it was very simplistic, it was unashamed and it was just out there.

'Whereas now, it’s somehow become a bit more underground and a bit more dangerous.'

A spokesperson for the BBC told MailOnline on Thursday: 'Like all parts of the organisation we adhere to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and take our duty of care for our audience, contributors and employees very seriously.'

An insider told MailOnline: 'The incident described took place over 19 years ago and under no circumstances would any similar language or behaviour be tolerated at the station in 2021.'

At the time, the Broadcasting Standards Commission upheld the complaint of a listener who said Moyles' remarks were inappropriate.

The BSC Standards Panel said it noted Moyles was well known for his near-the-knuckle approach 'but took the view that the explicit sexual content and humour had exceeded acceptable boundaries for the time of transmission'.

In 2002, the DJ was reprimanded by the BBC, Broadcasting Standards Commission and Ofcom, who upheld complaints when he threatened Neil Fox.

The radio host was shown a yellow card by BBC chiefs after he threatened to 'tear Dr Fox's head off and poo down his neck', in response to Neil saying he would like to battle it out with Chris on the BBC show, Celebrity Boxing,

A listener complained at the time over the violent threats and use of inappropriate language.

The BBC's programme complaints unit agreed and issued the following statement in response 'The remarks had been prompted by personal comments from the rival DJ. However, what began as a humorous response became too forceful and prolonged.'

Sexism (2006)

Ofcom found Moyles in breach of their broadcasting rules in July 2006 after complaints when the DJ called female listeners 'dirty w****s' when talking about people who urinated in the show.
