Julie Goodwin opened up about a distressing chapter of her life during an interview on The Project on Sunday.

The 53-year-old MasterChef Australia star has just released her autobiography, Your Time Starts Now, which describes how she was sexually abused as a child and later attempted suicide as a teenager.

The TV chef, who rose to fame with her winning appearance on MasterChef in 2009, also battled suicidal thoughts just a few years ago.

Speaking with host Hamish Macdonald, 42, of that time, Goodwin tearfully recounted a harrowing moment when she was about to go for a swim, uncertain if she would return.

Goodwin emotionally described how a pair of shoes her young son had bought for her served as a  reminder of the immense pain her loved ones would endure.
