Michael van Gerwen knew he had his hands on the PDC World Darts Championship title for a third time as soon as he took a 4-0 lead in the final against Michael Smith.

The world number one took advantage of a nervy and wasteful start by first-time finalist Smith to ease into a commanding lead on his way to a 7-3 win at Alexandra Palace.

But there was a moment in the match where a comeback looked possible as Smith fired a 124 checkout to finally get on the board and then posted back-to-back bullesye finishes to make it 4-2.
