Britain's George Russell believes he is in the running to go up against Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season.

Speaking at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the final round before Formula One's summer break, Russell threw his helmet in the ring to join his five-time world championship winning compatriot at Mercedes.

Mercedes are deliberating over the identity of Hamilton's team-mate for 2020.

'Any driver would love the opportunity to drive in a championship-winning car,' said Russell. 'I would be stupid to go against that.

'The fact is, I want to win races and have an opportunity to win titles. There is no disrespect and hard feelings towards Williams when I say that I want to be in a world championship-winning car. Who doesn't?
