Joe Root has backed Jofra Archer to ‘learn very quickly’ from his first England tour after two Tests at Mount Maunganui and Hamilton netted him only two wickets at 104 apiece.
Archer was more dangerous than those figures suggest, and had two catches dropped off his bowling in the second Test, which ended in a draw to hand New Zealand a 1-0 victory.
But after taking 22 wickets in four Ashes games over the summer at just 20 apiece, Archer’s tour was a pitiless reminder of the demands made by the Kookaburra ball and flat overseas pitches.
