In a morning session interrupted by rain showers at Trent Bridge, India lost their fifth wicket but England's seamers couldn't dislodge KL Rahul or Ravindra Jadeja before lunch.
Pant, one of world cricket's most box office batsmen, signalled his intent by striding down the track and clubbing James Anderson to the boundary in the opening moments of play but only eight minutes were possible before the heavens opened.
