Collingwood star Mason Cox has detailed his horrific battle following an eye injury he suffered in 2018, saying 'half his retina fell off' before he was left blind for two weeks.
The American, who is due to be sworn in as an Australian citizen at the MCG in two weeks, now wears prescription sunglasses when he plays footy to protect the eye from further injury and improve his sight.
Cox has faced humiliation from fans and the media for wearing the glasses on and off the field, and he's had enough.
He wants people to understand the glasses are not a fashion statement, but something he needs so he doesn't go blind.

'There's still people in the media talking about it and saying some disgusting things about it,' he said on KIIS FM.
'It's a medical thing; it is a different look, I understand that, but I've almost gone blind from playing footy, so I'm going to have to protect my eyes so that post-footy I'll be able to see.'
