Since the introduction of the College Football Playoff, there have been advocates trying to get the field to expand - with the belief that four teams aren't enough to decide a national champion.

The CFP announced Thursday that the committee will expand the field of teams to 12 beginning in the 2024-25 season.
A final hurdle was seemingly cleared yesterday, when the group that organizes the Rose Bowl agreed to expansion.

With the six CFP bowl games - the Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Cotton Bowl - all agreeing to expansion, the deal was announced officially earlier today.
The CFP also revealed a schedule and structure for how the 12 teams will play each other.
Games will be played at the home sites of the higher seeds (5,6,7, and 8) on the week ending in December 21, 2024.
Each of the four quarterfinal games and two semifinals will rotate between the six bowls. In 2024, the Fiesta, Peach, Rose, and Sugar Bowls will host the quarterfinals - with the Cotton and Orange Bowls set to have the semifinals. In 2025, the Fiesta and Peach Bowls will host the
