Johnny Herbert and Paul di Resta's axing from Sky Sports F1 are due to the broadcaster looking to trim their bloated punditry team.

Herbert and Di Resta's exits ahead of the 2023 season were confirmed by Sky with the new campaign set to get underway in two months.

Sportsmail understands though that their departure comes as both of their contracts were due for renewal and were simply not extended.

Former grand prix driver Paul di Resta will also not feature as a pundit this term

Herbert, 58, had been part of the original team of pundits when the broadcaster first gained the rights for the 2012 season and has been a mainstay for over the last decade.

But the two-time grand prix winner will be severely missed as he was immensely popular among his colleagues, as well as fans, with the former Benetton driver often a jovial feature of the broadcasts.

Herbert confirmed publicly he would not be part of Sky's team on Instagram with a picture of all the 2022 members captioned, 'going to miss the team'.
