Novak Djokovic was channelling his inner Michael Jordan as he contemplated why he could yet win all four Grand Slams this year.

Only a fool would rule that out, although the French Open in the spring is set to host another colossal showdown with Rafael Nadal trying to block him, with the two of them locked on 22 major titles each.

Nadal alone can match Djokovic’s ability to tough out the most important points, which is how they have dominated the biggest tournaments into their mid-thirties.

‘Fortunately for me I have managed to win statistically more of those close matches, big matches, than the ones that I lost,’ reflected Djokovic as he paraded the Australian Open trophy around Melbourne.

‘As Michael Jordan used to say, people only remember the good times. I failed, I failed, I failed and that is why I succeeded in the end.’

Before he can think about Paris Djokovic has to sort out his schedule for the next few months and, as ever with him, it is not entirely straightforward.

He wants to play the next two Masters events, in Indian Wells and Miami, but is currently thwarted due to his unvaccinated status.
