Before Andy Farrell put on his dinner suit and headed for the Grand Slam party in Dublin, he pulled aside Johnny Sexton for a quiet word.

‘There’s bigger fish to fry than this, you know — we’re on to the World Cup,’ he told his captain, while sipping on a can of Guinness.

They made their way up the road for a black-tie dinner with their families at the RDS Arena, where 12 of the starting XV play their club rugby for Leinster.

They will return to provincial action over the coming weeks and, given the joined-up thinking across club and country, their workloads will be monitored closely to give them the best chance of glory in October.

‘We expect our side when we get to the first game of the World Cup to be a lot better than we are,’ said Farrell, whose Wigan accent remains just as strong despite seven years of living in the Irish capital.
