At an event in central London on Tuesday night, former England international and TV pundit Karen Carney and Brighton chief executive Paul Barber contributed to a debate about whether a woman could manage a Premier League team in the near future.

Carney insisted any female coach would need huge commitment from the club that hires her to protect against the inevitable misogyny and abuse.

She also described how she was warned before starting her broadcasting career to brace herself for 'a barrage of abuse' - and that a manager breaking through the glass ceiling to manage at the top level of the men's game would experience exponentially more.
